Common Slate Roof Problems

• Slipped Slates — Over time, the copper or galvanised nails holding slates in place can corrode, allowing slates to slip down or out of position. A slipped slate leaves a gap that lets water into the roof cavity. We re-fix slipped slates with appropriate fasteners and, where needed, install tingles (small metal clips) to hold slates that can’t be re-nailed.
• Cracked Slates — Thermal expansion, foot traffic from previous tradespeople, or hail impact can crack slates. Small cracks may be stable for years; others will worsen and need replacement. We assess each crack individually and replace where necessary with matching slate.
• Missing Slates — Storms are the usual culprit. A missing slate is an open invitation for water ingress. We carry a range of slate types to respond quickly and match your existing roof.
