We had a few Sydney-based slate companies to repair the slate roof after storm damage, with not a great outcome, including cracked slates remaining and several leaks through, inferior workmanship..  I then called Oliver Stearman at Slate Roof Restorations who was able to fix all problems, including the  water leaks and secure the roof, without over- promising and under-delivering, which was a constant with the previous companies. Yes. Manly’s proximity to the ocean means your roof is regularly exposed to salt-laden air, which can accelerate corrosion in fixings, flashings, and gutters. This is why we use copper nail fixings and lead flashings on all our Manly re-roofs, both materials handle coastal conditions far better than standard alternatives.

Sometimes, yes. Slate itself is extremely durable and individual tiles can outlast everything around them. On older Manly homes, it’s often the battens, sarking, and fixings that fail first while much of the slate remains sound. We inspect every roof individually and will always tell you honestly what can be salvaged and what needs replacing.

Manly falls under Northern Beaches Council, and parts of the area are subject to heritage conservation guidelines. If your home is heritage-listed or sits within a conservation area, your re-roof will need to meet specific requirements around materials, colour, and method. We’re experienced working within these guidelines and can advise you on what applies to your property before any work begins.

Most homes in Manly that originally had slate were built during the Federation or Edwardian era, roughly 1890 to 1915. For these homes, natural slate paired with terracotta ridge caps is the most sympathetic choice, it matches the original look and meets most heritage requirements. It’s exactly what we used on our recent re-roof in the area.

A repair makes sense when the slate itself is mostly intact and the underlying structure is sound. Replacement is usually the better option when the battens and sarking have deteriorated, when there are widespread leaks, or when the roof has been patched repeatedly over the years. Many Manly homes we inspect have reached the point where ongoing repairs cost more in the long run than a full re-roof. A proper inspection will give you a clear answer.

Most re-roofs on Manly homes take between four and six weeks, depending on roof size, complexity, and access. Scaffolding, demolition, rebuilding the roof substrate, laying the slate, and finishing work all take time to do properly. We stage the work carefully so the home can remain occupied throughout, minimising disruption as much as possible.
